Ros Lockley
Mediator and Conflict Coach
Discipline has a bad reputation at the moment as we become aware of the negative impacts of discipline that gets out of hand. But discipline actually means to learn – that is why the people who learnt the most from Jesus were called his Disciples.
The problem is that discipline can often be equated with parents teaching their children through consequences or punishments.
What about if we looked at discipline in a new light: that of ourselves in the role of learner. What way do you learn best? With consequences for, or acceptance despite, making mistakes? I know that when I am in a new job or trying something new I learn better when I know that I am expected to make mistakes, that I will be guided through those mistakes and that I won’t be penalised for having made them.
This is one of the many realisations that I have made since doing the Parent Effectiveness Training. And my children have learnt so much more, we have less conflict and our relationship is much stronger.
